Good Fortune and Bad Resolutions

I went speeding past a cop earlier today going 40 in a 20 mph zone, and he didn’t pull me over. If that is any sign of how 2014 is going to go, I think it’ll be a good year.

This is going to be one of those obligatory “New Year, New Me!1!!” posts. Sorry. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it interesting and worthwhile for you!

One of my favorite videos on John and Hank Green’s VlogBrothers channel is called “What To Do With Your Life“. As a college freshman, this is something I think about quite often. Sometimes I wish I was one of those people on reality TV who assures the audience they were destined to be whatever they are. “I was singing before I could talk!” “The school hallways WERE my runway!” “I was born into a disgustingly rich family!”. But alas, I’ve been only slightly above average at everything I’ve considered myself good at in my entire life. With this video, I pushed any hesitation out of my mind and convinced myself that after 3 minutes and 23 seconds, I would know what I wanted to do with my life.

That’s not how it worked out. (Surprise!)

Despite that fact, the words of wisdom that John shares in that video have stuck with me, so I’d like to share them with you, in a convenient numbered list form:

  1. Study broadly and without fear.

  2. Learn a language if you can, because that will make your life more interesting.

  3. Read a little bit every day.

  4. Surround yourself with people you like and make cool stuff with them. In the end, what you do isn’t going to be nearly as interesting or important as who you do it with.

I still don’t know exactly what I want to do with my life, but this video helped me realize that I can do MANY things. As long as I’m doing something, and I think that that particular something is cool, I’m being successful. My resolution this year is to make cool stuff that I’m proud of, learn as much as I can, and spend more time with the people I like.

Happy 2014, here’s to hoping it will be a good year for all of us!
